The waters surrounding Northern Vancouver Island teem with a rich variety of marine species.
From July through October, the majestic Orca whales, known as the "Northern Residents," numbering around 260, grace these waters in search of salmon.
Steller Sea Lions, imposing in size, can be spotted congregating on coastal rock formations. These giants can stand as tall as 3 meters (10 feet) and weigh up to 1000 kilograms (2200 pounds), with diets consisting of diverse fish species. In contrast to the fish-eating Northern Residents, transient killer whales prey on marine mammals like the Steller Sea Lion. These transients roam in small packs, showcasing their refined hunting prowess, often observed by onlookers. When these formidable predators are nearby, the sea lions strategically retreat to elevated terrains.
Numerous local enterprises provide whale watching tours, offering unparalleled encounters with these oceanic inhabitants.
