The entrance to Johnstone Strait is situated near historic Telegraph Cove. This narrow passage of water lies between the east coast of Vancouver Island and the coastal mainland, and continues to flows downward for approximately 110 kilometers. Johnstone Strait is a busy thoroughfare for marine traffic which includes Alaska bound cruise ships, cargo vessels, fishing boats, and pleasure craft.
