Historic Telegraph Cove

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The Gikumi, which means "Chief" in the language of the Namgis First Nations, was first launched in 1954. This West Coast work boat was designed to service the Telegraph Cove sawmill and there she spent many years delivering freight or towing logs. In the 1980's, after the sawmill closed, the Gikumi became the first whale watching boat in British Columbia. For decades, passengers from around the world climbed aboard the Gikumi, ready to encounter an experience of a lifetime. She continued to service Telegraph Cove until 2017.

Telegraph Cove is located on the northern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This small but charming seaside community, built in the 1920's, features a boardwalk and quaint historic wooden buildings.

Now, during the summer months it has become a major destination spot for vacationers, recreational fishermen, and whale watchers. The Telegraph Cove Whale Interpretive Center boasts one of the best collections of marine mammal skeletons in British Columbia.
