Annually, between July and October, the majestic orcas make their way back to the Northern Vancouver Island waters. Nearly 260 "Northern Residents," a group of fish-eating orcas, frequent these parts chasing after salmon. Observing an orca perform a "spy hop," where the whale lifts its head straight up out of the water to survey its environment, is an unforgettable experience. The northern island is home to numerous whale watching and ecotourism businesses, each offering unique vantage points for these magnificent creatures, ensuring visitors an exceptional encounter.
