Sunlit Tranquility; A Heron's Solitude

Cluxewe Estuary, Port McNeill, Northern Vancouver Island

The great blue heron is a large wading bird , common near the shores of open water and in wetlands  It has a blue-gray upper body with black and white markings on its crown and underparts, a long neck, long legs and a short tail. It feeds mainly on fish, but also on amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and insects. It nests in colonies, often on trees or platforms near water. It is the largest heron found in Canada and one of the most widespread and adaptable herons in North America.

The Cluxewe estuary is a beautiful and diverse ecosystem that supports many species of plants and animals. It is located on the northern end of Vancouver Island, near the town of Port McNeill. The estuary is formed by the Cluxewe River, which flows into the Queen Charlotte Strait. The estuary is home to salmon, trout, herring, crabs, clams, oysters, and many other marine creatures. It also provides habitat for birds, such as eagles, herons, ducks, geese, and swans. The estuary is a popular destination for kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, and camping.
