"A Lofty Rest"

 Bald Headed Eagle

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

There are abundant opportunities to view Bald Eagles on Northern Vancouver Island. During the spring, when the herring spawn, and during the summer when the fish are plentiful, they swoop down over the water as they seize the prey with their sharp outstretched talons. In the fall, they gather in large numbers at rivers and streams to feast on the spawned-out salmon.

The numerous large coastal trees provide the necessary requirements for nest building. The trees are usually elevated and old, and are located near the water, at the edge of a forest, or in a tree that protrudes above the nearby canopy. The height and position of the tree is beneficial for observing prey and for providing unobstructed flying access to the nest from several different directions.
